Mercenaries of Svith
One of the more common jobs for a man (or elf or even sometimes dwarf) in Svith is to join a Rappeler crew. These mercenary groups take contracts from the Svith Aerial Navy or private concerns, ride the ships out over seemingly infinite cloud, and descend on ropes into the mist to collect materials from the earlier civilizations, crashed airships, forests, etc.
How they operate
- Pre mission – most groups are in fact, small companies. A single investor or group finances the start up equipment (rappelling gear, starting salaries, etc), contracts are taken, and payout is based on the group’s rate (usually percentage, flat fee for specialists). Once the contract is agreed upon and the details worked out, the group prepares to fly out
- On deck – Rappellers are not often required to do anything on deck of an airship. They usually just stay out of the way of the established crew, but on smaller ships, an extra set of hands is usually welcome, at least for the grunt work.
- The Drop – once at the Landing Zone, ropes are secured and dropped, and then rappellers descend the ropes. Some ships have winches to ease this, others do not.
- The Pickup – There are almost always 3 pick up times for contracted drops: Primary, Secondary, and Last Chance. All 3 are agreed upon by both groups. When a pick up time arrives, the group on the ground has to signal the airship by launching flares. There is a specific combination of colors that must be shown before the ropes are lowered. This two factor system was designed after ships kept pulling monsters up their ropes instead of rappellers.
